Season Extension & Moveable Hoophouse Workshop
March 22, 2008 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm
The Valley Organic Growers Association (VOGA), Colorado State University
Extension and USDA Western Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education
(WSARE) are presenting a Greenhouse Tour to explore several new techniques
in season extension. This program will look at four greenhouse businesses,
showing how solar energy and constant soil temperature can be sued
to heat your green or Hoophouse so it can be sued all year. The workshop
will show concepts and building techniques for structural heating efficiency
in fixed location houses.
- Cycling internal and external air through deep soil for heating air in house
- Cycling air in house into plant beds to warm soil and accelerate plant growth
- Using hot water under plant beds to warm soil and accelerate growth
- See how these techniques allow year-round growing at: TLC Greenhouses, Paonia – Zephyros Farm and Garden, Paonia – Thistle Whistle Farm, Hotchkiss – Peace & Plenty Farm, Hotchkiss
One greenhouse shown can be moved to five locations during the year to fully utilize the principals of season extension. The five cropping positions are:
- Winter: greens production
- Spring: asparagus production
- Early summer: tomato production
- Summer: heat loving summer crop production
- Fall: raspberry production
The Tour will start at 9:30 am at the Delta County Fairgrounds on Highway 92 (off Bridge Street on South 4th Street) in downtown Hotchkiss. It will conclude not later than 3:00 pm. Please bring a sandwich for lunch. Soup and drinks will be served.
PLEASE pre-register to allow us to get enough soup and drinks for you. Please register promptly in case we have to limit additional participation. Call Ginny or Ed at CSU Extension: 249-3935 to reserve your place. The moveable hoophouse part of the workshop (plus soup and drinks) is located at the Thistle Whistle Farm, 10872 3500 Road, Hotchkiss. Watch for parking directions!! Dress warmly– this is an outside workshop
VOGA meetings are educational and fun, meetings will resume after the summer.
